Humanistic Psychology
Above all, Dr. Malaiya operates under the principles of humanistic psychology. She believes that individuals are inherently growth-oriented and self-regulating. She approaches patients with unconditional positive regard and acceptance in order to provide the best possible environment for insight and personal growth. She views psychopathology as the result of creative adjustments to environments that were unable to meet individual needs. She aims to help people view themselves with more compassion and loving-kindness and to reduce overall patterns of judgment and self-criticism.
Attachment Theory
Attachment theory provides a context for relationship styles and interpersonal dynamics, which develop from early experiences. Many individuals experience patterns of insecurity in relationships, including anxiety and preoccupation as well as dismissiveness and avoidance. By establishing a secure and safe therapeutic relationship, as well as by promoting insight and self-awareness, Dr. Malaiya helps patients learn how to engage in emotional intimacy in ways that will be more satisfying and healthy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Dr. Malaiya integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques into all of her work. CBT is the most widely used evidence based treatment for mental health issues. Interventions include coping strategies, problem solving, and cognitive restructuring. She helps patients learn to examine, understand, and challenge problematic patterns of thought and behavior and learn to exist in new and healthier ways.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the act of bringing one's attention to the present moment. Dr. Malaiya’s training in Buddhist psychology provides a foundation of skills and knowledge in mindfulness and meditation. She encourages her patients to engage in mindfulness practices and provides psychoeducation on mindfulness principles and techniques. By becoming more mindful, individuals are able to have more insight, flexibility, and self-compassion.
Social Justice
Dr. Malaiya strongly believes that cultural competence is core to providing ethical treatment with all individuals. She has prioritized training in areas of diversity and multiculturalism and actively engages in consultation and self-reflection. She strives to maintain awareness of her own privileges and works toward a deep understanding of the intersectionality of race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomics, religion, age, ability, and other areas of identity.
